Sparrow Identification
The House Sparrow is the most prevalent sparrow species in Tennessee. However, in certain regions of the state, a newcomer known as the song sparrow can also be encountered. The House Sparrow is a compact bird with a streaked red to black back and white cheeks. The female House Sparrow, on the other hand, generally sports a predominantly brown plumage with a noticeable eye-stripe. These sparrows are primarily observed feeding on grass seeds and specific types of insects.
Problems and Damage
Sparrows are frequently spotted in residential areas, primarily because their preferred nesting sites are within or on building structures. The most common locations to find sparrows nesting include vents around the home, inside roof returns, and even gaps in the trim. It's advisable to identify and remove sparrow nests since they often harbor various parasites, including bed bugs, lice, and ticks. Sparrows are also known carriers of diseases such as Salmonellosis, Toxoplasmosis, and Coccidiosis. Nevertheless, it's essential to emphasize that not all sparrows carry diseases; however, any scratches or bites should still be promptly treated by a medical professional.
