Identifying Opossums
Tennessee is home to only one marsupial species. Which is the Virginia opossum. Being a mammal, it has a unique characteristic of possessing a pouch to carry its offspring. Opossums commonly display fur color variations that span from gray to white, and their size is roughly comparable to that of a typical house cat.
They have long hairless tails, small hairless ears, pink nose and pointed snout. Opossums have opposable thumbs, making them great climbers. Opossums are omnivorous and feed on a diverse diet including anything from scavenges for food to snakes. Generally male opossums are larger than females.
Problems and Damage
Opossums seek food in gardens and lawns because they are adaptive hunters for food. They are capable of digging under foundations of homes and under decks. If given the chance, they may take up residence in attics or crawl spaces. When opossums enter homes, their feces and urine can quickly contaminate the surrounding, potentially spreading diseases like Chagas disease, Tuberculosis, and Leptospirosis, although not all opossums carry these illnesses. Consequently, it is vital to seek medical attention for any bites or scratches caused by opossums to ensure proper care.
Prevention and Exclusions
