Lizard Identification
There are eight distinct lizard species that inhabit Tennessee, with the Common Five-Lined Skink being the most prevalent. These glossy lizards exhibit highly diverse color patterns. Adult males typically sport a brown or olive hue, with their head turning reddish or orange during the breeding season. Adult females, on the other hand, are generally brown with a bluish-gray tail. Both genders feature five white or yellowish stripes running the length of their bodies. Primarily inhabiting wooded areas, they primarily feed on insects like crickets, termites, and beetles.
Problems and Damage
Lizards may occasionally venture into homes in search of food and water, although they typically prefer outdoor environments. Lizards are not known to inflict damage on home structures; instead, they are often considered pests primarily due to their imposing appearance. Infestations of lizards can occur in areas with favorable conditions, such as an abundance of flies, fruit-bearing plants, and flowering vegetation. Additionally, areas with leaf-covered ground serve as ideal shelter spots for lizards.
