Flying Squirrel Identification
The Northern Flying Squirrel ranks among the tiniest tree-dwelling squirrels. These nocturnal rodents possess a distinctive membrane on both sides of their bodies, extending from the wrist to the ankle, which allows them to glide. Flying squirrels typically display a soft brown to gray upper body, complemented by a lighter underside. In contrast to chipmunks and gray squirrels, they feature a flattened tail. Their diet primarily comprises nuts and fruits, occasionally supplemented with insects.
Problems and Damage
Similar to typical squirrels, they can take up residence in an attic or wall, leaving behind messy droppings and potential parasites. They have the capability to gnaw through walls, wires, and other vulnerable parts of a home.
Their urine and feces can potentially trigger allergic reactions or respiratory problems in some individuals. Moreover, they may harbor diseases such as rabies or typhus, so it's crucial to never attempt to touch or handle a flying squirrel.
